About the tune

The melody of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star comes from an 18th-century French song, "Ah! vous dirai-je, maman". Mozart wrote a well-known set of twelve variations on the same tune (K. 265). The same melody is also used for the alphabet song and "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep".

Why it is a good first song

The whole song uses only six white keys, from C to A, and every phrase moves by small steps or repeats a note. It is made of short phrases that come back, so once you know the first two lines you already know most of the song.

How to practise

Put your right thumb on middle C (C4). Your fingers then rest naturally over C, D, E, F and G, and you only need to stretch for A. Play each line slowly until it feels easy, then join them together. Try the song again with the note names turned off to test yourself.
