The number after each letter is the octave: C4 is middle C, C5 is the C above it. ♯ means the black key just to the right.

About the song

The words of Mary Had a Little Lamb are a poem by Sarah Josepha Hale, published in 1830. In 1877 Thomas Edison recited the rhyme as one of the first recordings made on his phonograph.

Why it is a good first song

The melody uses only four notes: C, D, E and G. Most of it moves between three neighbouring keys, so your hand does not have to move at all. It is one of the easiest songs to learn on piano.

How to practise

Place your thumb on C4, your second finger on D and your third finger on E. Use your fifth finger, or your fourth if it is more comfortable, for G. Start slowly and keep a steady beat; the long notes at the end of each phrase last twice as long as the others.
